Rollerball - Circa 1975

I'd never seen Rollerball before until last weekend when I received the movie from Netflix but I'll have to say I really enjoyed it and dug the bikes. The motorcycles reminded me as a cross between speedway bikes and road racers and they were loud and most definitely running straight pipes. The wooden banked track looked similar to a bike velodrome or a more banked version of the old boardtracks. The helmets the players wore were pretty interesting too as they appeared to be 70s motorcycle 3/4 helmets fitted with old football two bar facemasks, a combo that worked well together!

Though I've never seen an original example Randy Smith's "Panhead's Reign" t-shirt is one of my all time favorites!

I never knew these old Topps cards existed but I was tooling around on the internet and found the following website: http://www.lostwackys.com/Wacky-Packages/ . Most of the designs relate to grocery store products but I found a few auto related ones shown above. The robot card was thrown in for Rodney's amusement!

The box art is about as good as it gets. I love those saddlebags too as they're pure 60's punk rock! He's definitely TOO MUCH man!

Riding Safely in a Violent World

If you haven't been hit or crashed a bike before you're the lucky one and if you've lived through an accident you're luckier still. After hearing of another crash today, and it wasn't the rider's fault, its truely a sobering reality that as cautious as you may be you're never safe on the road. All you can do is ride the best you know how and pray you're number doesn't come up any sooner than its supposed to.

The Art of Wing Chun!

So I'm flipping through the Disposable Skateboard Bible tonight, bored as usual, and come across this Alva John Thomas deck from 1987. The art on the deck strikes a chord as I was just joking with Rodney yesterday about the Wing Chun Kung-Fu book I gave him months ago. They say you can't judge a book by its cover but this one has the best action shot you could possibly hope for and it translates nicely to laminated plywood!

Sporty Primary Cover o' Mystery???

Ok, so I picked up this cover on Ebay for no other reason but curiosity. It was reasonable and I was talking with Mason and neither of us could figure out the maker, year, etc. From what little I've read, K models had a cast primary, not the sheet metal variety like this one which resembles a late 50's Sportster cover. That cover has some fins where this one is smooth and has the diamond at center. I don't know if its a since forgotton piece of junk or an early one off but its an interesting wall hanger nonetheless.

The Humble Approach

First of all, I'd like to thank Paul of the Show & Go Cycle blog for posting the following great early 1961 custom bike article from the Hot Rod Ideas Magazine: http://showandgo.blogspot.com/2009/08/hot-rod-ideas-part-ii-custom-show-bikes.html (check out the entire article on his site). I was so stoked on it that I picked up a copy and arriving today I read the article and was really impressed with the showmanship of these early customizers. How rad would it be to not even tag your name to the bike in a show because you genuinely wanted people to appreciate the craftsmanship of the build itself without any promotional gimmicks or trophies involved? I can truely say these guys were into custom bikes for all the right reasons!

Ok, well here's another non-motorcycle related clip but I was watching the 80's movie "Can't Buy Me Love" and this PSA with Pee Wee Herman came up and its so lacking it credibility that its ruling!
